The Cards
Each Arcanight’s soul is contained within a tarot card. Until they find an owner, the Arcanight is dormant within the card, but once they have found a human to bond with they can retreat and emerge from their card at any time. They retain their sense of hearing even while within their card and can still communicate telepathically with their chosen being.
Arcanight cards are drawn to their destined owners by fate, and so often appear in unusual ways. For instance, a card could be found in an old library book, or returned along with a lost object.
The cards themselves appear to be ordinary tarot cards in every way, although they are surprisingly resilient. It is near impossible to damage a card through normal means; magic is the only way to harm them. Any damage to the card will be reflected as injuries on the Arcanight, and if the card is completely destroyed the Arcanight will cease to exist.
The designs on the cards themselves are often unique to each Arcanight, although there are some that may appear to belong to the same 'deck' -- these may have matching visual themes and/or card backs.
